3D PRINTING
Flexible manufacturing without tooling costs
Mumford Engineering offers FDM 3D printing as a fast, flexible manufacturing service for prototypes, low-volume production and bespoke components.
Our in-house 3D print farm provides an effective alternative or complementary process to traditional injection moulding, particularly where tooling costs, lead times or design changes make mould manufacture less practical.
By removing the need for dedicated tooling, 3D printing allows parts to be produced quickly and cost-effectively, helping customers move from concept to functional component with greater flexibility.
From prototype to production support
3D printing is well suited to projects where speed, flexibility or design iteration is important. It can be used to produce complex geometries, customised parts and low-volume components that may be difficult, impractical or uneconomical to manufacture through conventional moulding methods.
Our 3D printing service supports:
- Functional engineering components
- Prototypes and proof-of-concept models
- Jigs, fixtures and manufacturing aids
- Enclosures and housings
- Brackets, mounts and mechanical parts
- Replacement or obsolete components
- Demonstration models and promotional items
- Bespoke customer projects
Whether you need a single development part or a small batch of finished components, Mumford can help identify the most practical manufacturing route.
In-house FDM print farm
Our print farm uses FDM technology, one of the most widely adopted additive manufacturing processes for functional prototyping and low-volume production.
- 14 Bambu Lab P1S printers
- 4 Bambu Lab H2D printers
This gives us the capacity to support one-off prints, repeat orders and small-batch production, with additional machines added as required to meet demand.
Available build volumes include:
- 256 × 256 × 256 mm
- 350 × 320 × 325 mm
Where larger components are required, parts may be designed as multi-piece assemblies depending on the application.
Materials to suit your application
A range of thermoplastic materials is available depending on the requirements of the part, including strength, flexibility, appearance, temperature resistance and cost.
- PLA
- PET-G
- PET-G with glass fill
- ABS
- TPU
- PBT
- Fibre-reinforced composite materials
Our team can advise on material selection based on the intended use of the component and any specific performance requirements.
Reliable and repeatable production
Our print farm is configured to support consistent production across multiple machines. Calibrated equipment, controlled print profiles and appropriate material selection help provide reliable results across prototypes, repeat parts and small production runs.
We can also support additional production requirements where needed, including insert placement, part assembly, orientation advice and identifying cosmetic or functional surfaces before printing.
File support and design guidance
We can work with common 3D file formats including STL, STEP, 3MF and OBJ. Other formats may also be supported depending on the project.
For best results, supplied models should be checked for dimensional accuracy, suitable wall thicknesses, appropriate tolerances and clean, watertight geometry. If support is required, Mumford can provide guidance on file preparation, material choice, print orientation and general design suitability for FDM manufacturing.
Practical support from design to finished part
As part of Mumford Engineering’s wider manufacturing capability, our 3D printing service gives customers a flexible route from early-stage development through to low-volume production.
Whether used on its own or alongside our design, tooling and injection moulding services, 3D printing provides a practical way to reduce lead times, test designs and produce functional parts without the upfront cost of mould tooling.
